Parsons has a lot of history throughout the area. In our downtown district you can visit the Carnegie Library, The Presbyterian Church, St. Patricks Catholic Church, or our two Museums. We have the Old KATY Hospital and Oakwood Cemetary not too far from downtown.

Carnegie Arts Center

The former Carnegie Library (May 18, 1909 to April 18, 1977) is now the home to the Parsons Arts and Humanities Council and their annual Autumn Art Affair exhibit, the Kaleidoscope Theatre for Young People, and various other community events. After undergoing some initial renovation at the beginning of the decade, further renovation and restoration is currently being planned by the City and the Arts and Humanities Council to make this facility a truly beautiful and functional centerpiece of the community.

Oakwood Cemetery
Located at 200 South Leawood, is Oakwood Cemetery. A portion of the cemetery contains Civil War graves and statues. Civil War veterans bought a portion of Oakwood Cemetery in 1886 and named it Antietam Circle.

The Presbyterian Church

Dedicatory services for the Presbyterian Church as it now stands were held December 8, 1907. The original cost was $60,000 for the building and $15,000 for the organ donated by Col. Wm. Busby of McAlester, Oklahoma.

The Old KATY Hospital
Originally served the Katy Railroad and was completed in 1922. The Katy House, which served as nurses' quarters, was added in 1927. The hospital was one of about 40 major railroad hospitals nationwide, 4 of which were located in Kansas. The Katy Hospital and Katy House were designed in the colonial revival style and incorporated emerging elements in modern hospital design of the time. The Parsons hospital was organized in 1913 and operated until its closing in 1985. Currently the Katy House provides temporary housing for nurses & doctors serving at Labette Health. The Katy Hospital is currently being used for storage.
